Our Service
We meet up to 800 community members a month. Our nurses travel
to four rural schools, an elder home, and a neighborhood with a large homeless population to provide care each week. We offer acute and
follow-up care, health education,
blood tests, ultrasounds, well baby visits, a safe place to shower, free
clothing, and more.
OUR SOLUTION
Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic is our free medical clinic in Harar, Ethiopia. It is staffed by local health care providers. Rural schools serve as satellite clinics. We also have a mobile clinic that can travel to clients. All treatment, medication, and medical devices are provided for free... A typical client can be treated for less than $8.
The need
Ethiopia has one of the worst shortages of medical care in the world. UNICEF estimates that in rural areas of Ethiopia, 94% of people lack any access to health care. Even in the cities, 42% of people lack access to basic care. The U.S. has about 1 doctor for every 300 people. In Ethiopia, there is 1 doctor for every 40,000 people.
THE FUTURE
In 2023, we plan to add five more schools to our satellite program and furnish a complete medical laboratory. More homes for the homeless girls, we went to add the 3rd home at the end of 2023. We hope to build a well for the community use and we want to build a state-of-the-art medical facility on our own land.
Wegayhu's story
Wegayhu Ketema was raised by her grandmother in a one-room house in Harar, Ethiopia. When Wegayhu's naighbure ruptured her eardrum, she received no medical treatment. The injury festered until she had surgery in India 10 years later. Wegayhu vowed to become a nurse so other children would not have to suffer like she did. As an adult Wegayhu moved to the U.S., became a nurse and began dreaming of opening a free clinic in her hometown. Now she is delighted to provide Ethiopian children with the healthcare she never had.
