Our Mission

Demonstrating Love Through Action

We demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ by ministering to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those in distress. In a country where there is only 1 doctor per 40,000 people, our free clinic in Harar is a lifeline for hundreds of families every month.

Every nurse, every treatment, every well — it all starts with people who believe that compassion can change the world.

Wegayehu Ketema, Co-Founder

Our Founder's Story

From Pain to Purpose

Wegayehu Ketema grew up in a one-room house in Harar, Ethiopia, raised by her grandmother. As a child, a neighbor ruptured her eardrum — and she received no medical treatment for ten years.

That experience lit a fire in her heart. She vowed to become a nurse and one day return to build a free clinic for the people of her hometown — so no child would have to suffer as she did.

Today, Wegayehu is the co-founder of Siloam Ethiopia, and that dream clinic serves over 800 patients every single month.

0:26My name is Dr. Gudeta Zewde. I work at Siloam Medium Clinic. I work as a medical doctor at this clinic.
0:33My name is Girma Gibremeskel. I serve here at Siloam Medium Clinic as a chief health officer expert.
0:45The clinic was established by two visionaries.
0:50Sister Wegayhu & Pastor Demeke — We are Siloam Ethiopia establishers & visionaries (Pastor Demeke Getahun and his wife, Wegayhu Ketema).
1:12My wife & I have been thinking about this vision, Siloam... maybe for about 25 years.
1:26After many years and after our kids grew up we came back to our vision.
1:43We started the legal process and established the organization as a non-profit organization.
1:54The Clinic started its first work on June 20th, 2018 in Harar, Ethiopia.
2:01When we began, our focus was to help people in poverty with health care.
2:09The clinic treats everyone of different ages without discriminating against any ethnic groups, religion, or language.
2:24The clinic was established to serve those that cannot afford health care.
2:31I was in a car accident and I used to use a wheelchair and crutches to move around.
2:39At the time I did not have any money, son/daughter, or mother and father to help me.
2:46When I was in the middle of this stress, some friends referred me to this clinic.
2:55Then I came to the clinic with the help of my friends and I was treated and taken care of for free with no cost at all.
3:06I have been here for more than a year now and I am walking now because of this clinic. I give all of my gratitude to them.
3:18My name is Hana Henok. I am in 5th grade and I am 12 years old.
3:23I had asthma since I was 3 years old. My asthma was treated here at the clinic for the first time.
3:31As a treatment, I have been given medication as well. This is my medication. The doctor gave me this for my asthma.
3:41They gave me the treatment for free and they told me to come every month for a check-up.
3:47We are focusing on health care because we know the problem Ethiopia has when it comes to health care.
3:56And my wife is a nurse and she had the desire to help her home country or hometown with health care since she was a little girl.
4:12My name is Hagos Araya. I live in this Shenkor region (Harar).
4:19They come every week to check my blood pressure. Siloam has been helping me for at least 4 years.
4:28They come every week to check our blood pressure and our glucose level. They also encourage us to come to the clinic if anybody needs treatment.
4:39They have treated my ear and I am healed now. And I got all of the treatment for free and every service they provide is for free.
4:47They never give up, they always come here for a check-up. We can say Siloam is our life.
4:53If Siloam Clinic was not here or if they did not help us we will be unworthy.
4:59One day I saw a little girl fallen on the ground. We then picked her up and took her to the clinic.
5:05When the doctor checked her, they said the girl was dehydrated.
5:14When I was sick in school, they brought me to the Siloam clinic located in front of my school.
5:23Then they gave me lots of treatment and they told me I was dehydrated.
5:31In Harar, there is a water shortage problem. In fact, in some towns, they only get water once a month. In our school, we do not have water.
5:38When we found out about this water problem, it bothered us.
5:50Right away we dug a well for water and right away we found groundwater close to the school area.
6:00My name is Sayen Fozi and I am in 6th grade. I had a gastric problem and I came to the Clinic.
6:16I got the care and the medication for free.
6:48Siloam clinic also works with local similar organizations.
6:53For example an organization named Abrha Bata provides care for seniors in need...
7:04We help the organization with basic checkups such as hypertension, diabetes, as well as timely check-ins by going to their facility.
7:37Siloam organization also has other aspects. We bring little girls off the street and make them our family. At this time God gave us 5 beautiful girls.
7:54My name is Beza Getachew.
7:56My name is Eden Niguse. My name is Tsinat. My name is Ruth Elias. My name is Meron Alemu.
8:04My mother got sick and died. I used to live alone with my brothers and life was very hard.
8:11My mother could not support me. Therefore I came to this organization. I used to live with my mother and she could not support me so I came into this organization.
8:19We get a medical check-up every month. We get an education and health care is provided. I have begun getting good grades in school.
8:27I get educated, eat, drink and get every necessity of life.
8:36I have a mother, dad, and good health care. What they do for me is better than my mother and father. I have found a mother and father.
8:44I get educated, I am happy, and I play with my sisters. I have a father and a mother. When I grow up I want to be three things: a pilot, a Doctor, and an artist.
8:58Me, I want to be an Art tech in the future.
9:01I want to be a Doctor — because I want to help mothers in villages that lose their life during childbirth due to health care shortages.
9:18I want to be an Art tech because I want to build houses with my design for those that need it.
9:26I want to be a Doctor because I like helping people when they are sick.
9:30We do not want the patients to just come to our clinic — we like to go where they are and serve them.
9:40We go to their town, facilities, and houses. We are very content with this service.
9:51They help me every month and they provide food and drinks as well.
9:58First, my leg has a problem. Then my left hand and leg stopped working.
10:17Siloam clinic comes all the way to my house and provides health care. If I need medication or a check-up they provide that for me.
10:28I do not have anybody or relatives. I have no sisters or relatives. I am just by myself.
